We had a wonderful experience with Abeln Floor Systems from start to finish on our new wood floor project. We live in a 129 year old home in Webster Groves that had extensive dips throughout the entire first floor. When we first purchased the home it was apparent there were a number of issues lurking under the 40 year wood flooring. There were extensive “wavy” areas in all 3 of the main rooms with some floors being as much as 1.5”+ out of level. Our fears were confirmed once the old flooring was removed, revealing a large number of problem areas of the subfloor. As we began the bidding process, many wood flooring contractors wouldn’t even attempt to bid the project, or simply priced it so high it was not in our budget. That was not the case with Jim Abeln and his crew. From our first meeting, Jim walked us through the process and explained in detail how his crew could remedy the multiple sagging subfloor issues we faced. His bid was very fair and included different price points for various types of wood to give us a full picture of what was available to us. His passion for hardwood flooring was evident from the moment we met. After some deliberation, we ended up choosing to install a job finished 3.25” wide white oak floor and we could not be happier with the final product! Jim’s crew spent multiple days shimming out numerous low spots throughout our home, skillfully using a combination of different plywood thicknesses, roofing shingles and other materials to smooth out our existing pine subfloors prior to the installation of the new white oak flooring. The crew were always courteous, quick with a smile and eager to talk through the project with us. We were comfortable enough with them to leave them in our home for multiple days throughout the project while we lived with family. Throughout the entire process, Jim would check in to update us on the progress and talk through any questions we might have. We went from having a floor that was an eyesore to a new wood floor that is a flat, solid and perfectly installed, sanded and finished centerpiece of our home. Frankly, at the beginning, we didn’t think our new wood floors could look as good as they do. The final product is stunning! I cannot recommend Abeln Floor Systems enough! In the spring of 2018 my husband and I purchased our dream home in the rolling hills of Wildwood, MO. Although we loved many aspects and amenities that this 15 year old home offered, we knew that prior to moving in, we wanted to refinish over 1500 square feet of existing hardwood flooring that had been worn and damaged over the years. In addition to refinishing the existing Bruce pre-finished hardwood, we had an additional 1500 square feet of carpet in the dining room, library, master bedroom and master closet that we wanted to convert over to hardwood. Deciding what we wanted to do was the easy part; beginning the process to find a company that we could trust to turn our vision into reality proved to be much harder. I asked for recommendations from friends, family and community members- as I typically do when looking for home repair professionals. I called 4 recommended companies, but only two of those companies actually showed up for scheduled appointments to give estimates!!! We became a bit discouraged and worried that the scope of our job was a bit more involved than either of these two companies could handle based on our interviews with them. This was a big investment and we wanted it done right! That evening, out of a bit of desperation, I did a Google search for "Hardwood refinishing in St. Louis, MO". Abeln Floor Systems was among the first few results generated in my Google search. As I read positive review after positive review, I was very impressed with the level of detail that these past customers went into when praising Abeln Floor System's work. I grew more encouraged that I may have just stumbled upon the ideal company for our project! I was pleasantly surprised the following day when I called and was able to speak directly with Jim, the owner of Abeln Floor Systems. I explained our situation, our semi-tight timetable and desire to get an estimate quickly. Jim was eager to learn the details of our project and was able to schedule an in-home visit later that day! From our first meeting, I was very impressed with Jim's attention to detail and willingness to listen to our needs/desires and make them reality. He offered suggestions and alternatives when he thought that there might be a better solution to what we had planned- all delivered with respect and utmost care and concern for an exceptional finished product. My husband and I quickly decided that Jim Abeln and his team were the right fit for us! Jim quickly scheduled a start date and his amazing team (Matt, Brad and Blake) got right to it! Our project was quite extensive and we got to know these guys well over the weeks that they worked in our home. I developed a trust and admiration for these hard working and amazingly skilled craftsmen throughout the course of our job. During the first day of installation, a slight milling problem was discovered with the new oak hardwood that was sourced for our home. Jim ordered the work stopped immediately, arranged for its return, (all 1500+ square feet), and reordered new oak flooring from a different manufacturer. I appreciated it more than anything that Brad, Matt and Jim had a great line of communication and were all on the same page about not moving forward until a solution was found. Other companies/installers may have not been so honest and could have just pushed through to get the job done quickly despite a sub-optimal result. Not these guys! They took the utmost pride in their work and their finished product as if it was their own home! Work was completed in early June 2018 and we could not be more thrilled with our hardwood flooring! What once looked like an old, worn out high school gymnasium floor, is now a completely refreshed, but timeless centerpiece in our home. We marvel at how the newly placed wood matches so beautifully with the refinished original oak flooring. Not a single visitor has stepped foot in our home without offering sincere compliments on our newly laid and refinished hardwood. And, when they ask who did our floors, we enthusiastically say, Abeln Floor Systems!
I have a small home in Tower Grove South, built in the 30s, and recently tore out 20-year old carpeting in my converted attic space. I was hoping to expose a pristine pine subfloor, but instead found a partially complete and very abused subfloor with a variety of woods used to fill out the foundation for wall-to-wall carpeting in the late 90s. Consultation with the flooring department at one of the box stores was taking me in the direction of a complete subfloor overhaul that would have led to the destruction of both my original subfloor and budget. I decided to reach out to a flooring specialist for a second opinion and chose Abeln Floor Systems more or less on a whim. It only took about 15 minutes on the phone for Jim to get me going in the right direction. He explained that it would be possible not only to repair the damaged boards in my space, but also to remove the "filler materials" and complete my subfloor with reclaimed materials that provide a close match to the original flooring. After the initial consultation, Jim was very flexible with me as I postponed the job during the stay-at-home period in the city and now, two months later, the job was scheduled promptly and completed in a flash. Kenny completed the repair in one day of hard work, expertly filling out the floor and dealing with some of the more technical aspects of the job, including working in small spaces where the angled ceiling meets the floor and filling a narrow gap in the original subfloor caused by a change in the direction of the underlying joists. The reclaimed material is such a good match with my original yellow pine that I might believe it came from the same tree. For budgetary reasons, I have chosen to sand and finish the floor myself and I appreciate Jim's willingness to take on the repair-only job and offer advice as I move on to the next phase of my project. I am very satisfied with the work and happy to have found a flooring expert who prioritizes preservation of original materials, even in a modest old home like mine.
I am so impressed with how our floors turned out, it feels like we have a brand new house. Initially, we had shopped around for a few different quotes but, as soon as we met and talked with Jim, we knew this was who we wanted to refinish our 80+ year old floors. I could not be happier with Abeln Floor Systems' restoration of my original hardwood floors in my 99-year-old home. There were multiple spots of damage and discoloration that now looks brand new! Choosing a home with the original wood floors was a must-have for us. When we moved into our 1895 Tower Grove East home a couple years ago, it had exactly what we were looking for--beautiful heart pine floors throughout--but they were in rough shape. They showed years of deferred maintenance, damage from the previous owners' pets, and a few footprints from their DIY refinishing job-gone-wrong. After speaking with a few companies, we were skeptical of whether we'd be able to bring these old floors back to life. When we met Jim at Abeln Floor Systems, we instantly saw that he was passionate about restoration. His expertise is unparalleled and we knew he was the right person for this job. Abeln Flooring did a great job refinishing, installing/patching hardwood flooring in our 1924 house. When they were done with our kitchen dinning room it looked like the rest of the rooms only cleaner. This is exactly what we were hoping for. They were able to match the stain exactly to the original hardwood that runs throughout the rest of the house. Jim and this team were nice, tidy, and punctual. They left the space better then how the found it :) I would not only recommend them but would have them back to do any other project that are in their wheelhouse.
We give Abeln Floor Systems 10 stars+ on a 5 star rating system. Jim and his crew recently refinished the pine floors on the second floor of our 113 year old home in Tower Grove South. After we pulled up the carpeting, we discovered that half of the rooms had beautiful original yellow pine flooring and the other half was covered in vinyl flooring glued securely to the wooden floors. We did not know how to proceed. We interviewed several flooring companies to discuss options, and were very impressed with Jim's expertise and dedication to preserving the integrity of the aged yellow pine flooring that came through in our conversation. He shared our vision of the project that would keep the character of the original floors in place. Knowing we were leaving for a trip in a few weeks, Jim juggled his crew to accommodate our calendar and they all went out of their way to finish on time. They were extremely professional and kept the work area clean. Jim was very thorough in his explanation of what to expect, stopped in every day to check on the progress, and supplied reclaimed yellow pine to match our aged floors in spots that required replacement. Jim and team were absolutely great to work with. They gave great advice during a consultation/quote, kept dust to a minimum (we didn't even notice any), and worked around our schedule to refinish floors that have been covered with carpet since the 60s! They even went as far as to repair damage (staples, tack strips, door hardware, etc.) and put in new header boards to help transition the floors more smoothly to the existing parquet flooring! I can't recommend them enough!

Jim's team recently refinished the hardwood floors in my house which had been covered by glue, linoleum tile and carpet. He understood our tight deadline and was able to prioritize our project accordingly and complete on time. He was very informative throughout, communicating upfront about the condition of the existing floor and identifying / recommending damaged floorboards to be replaced. My partner and I recently ripped up the carpet on the main floor in our 1920's bungalow. We had the intention of refinishing the hardwood floors underneath ourselves, but after seeing the condition of the floors we knew we were in over our heads and needed to call a professional. Our floor boards were not only thin, but had staining, scratches, termite damage, bad repair jobs, missing boards, and holes cut out. We honestly weren't even sure we would be a candidate for refinishing, so we searched for a local company that had experience working with older homes/floors as we wanted to try to save them. We were lucky to find Abeln Floor Systems. Jim came over to survey our floors and had us feeling confident that the floors would turn out great. He even had 2" red oak depression floor boards on hand to do our repairs (and we had to replace over 30 boards). Kenny did an excellent job repairing all the damage and took good care in sanding our boards. You can't even tell where we had repairs done. We went with the special oak stain color for a neutral look and are really pleased with the results. Both Kenny and Jim were also on time and easy to get ahold of throughout the process which was much appreciated. We can't wait to move our furniture back in and start enjoying our beautiful new floors!
Our experience with Abeln Floor Systems was top notch. We recently purchased a 100+ year old home that had some badly worn hardwood floors. We love the feel of the depression oak floors, so we wanted to refinish the floors, not replace them. I had about five contractors come through to bid. Jim Abeln came by (on time) and took more time measuring and evaluating the floors than any other contractor. Of all the contractors that came by, Jim was the only one that was confident that he could refinish the floors, as opposed to tearing out and replacing, which all of the other contractors wanted to do. It should be noted that replacing the floors would have been about twice as expensive as refinishing them, so Jim's evaluation that he could successfully refinish the floors was not self-serving. Jim and his very professional crew started work immediately once the contract was signed, and they never missed a day once the job got started. Further, he checked in regularly - often times with a text after the work day letting me know what had been done, and what the upcoming day's schedule entailed. The level of direct accessibility was great. If I had a question or concern, I would hear back immediately. I wish I had better pictures of the final product, but I'll share what I have. We recently moved into a home built in 1914. We were searching for a contractor to refinish our hardwood floors. We called Jim Abeln to give us a bid for this work. Little did we know what an education Jim would impart to us. Our flooring was quarter sawn pine flooring 3.25'' wide. Jim educated us about our pine flooring and explained the summer and winter growth patterns. Jim could explain to us where radiators probably were and where original oil cloth rugs were and why they were positioned as such. We felt Jim was a craftsman and extremely knowledgeable about old St. Louis homes and their flooring. Jim warned us about some dark spots in the flooring and also where closets had been and how our landing was amended. These spots would possibly not sand out but would add character to the flooring. Needless to say, the floors are amazing. At the end of the job Jim inspected all areas of the job, every room, every closet, every step, the landing, and the hallway. Kenny, the craftsman who repaired, sanded and applied the finish coats on the wood was also very experienced and easy to talk with about our 100+ year old flooring. The repairs Kenny made do not look repaired; they look original. Kenny is amazingly talented and we were very blessed to have him work on our project. I would definitely recommend Abeln Floor Systems especially if you have old pine or hardwood flooring. They are caring, knowledgeable craftsmen who will care about your floors like they are theirs.
Abeln Floor Systems refinished all of the hardwood floors at our residence about four years ago. We couldn't be happier with the way the floors looked then and how they have handled people and pet traffic the last four years. Jim Abeln came and looked at the four rooms we wanted refinished. Gave us a good price and explained the process. One of his workers, Kenny, came to do the refinishing and likewise explained on a daily basis what was going to take place that day. Very little dust was left, and the work exceeded all of my expectations. Jim also would periodically call to find out how it was going. I would use Jim's company again in a heart beat. His company was professional, did great quality work and even repaired some nicks that were in the floor before they started. The floors look like new.

My wife and I used Abeln based on the referral of someone who used them for a project and has high standards. We had Abeln refinish all of the hardwoods in our home. They also laid in new flooring in our foyer. We decided to use Rubio Monocoat as the finish for a floor. It gives a nice matte finish. It's a newer product and we heard from several people that it requires highly skilled flooring people for it to turn out well. Abeln did a great job and it looks fantastic. Everyone we interacted with were professional and personable. Would definitely use them again.
If you are looking to get your wood floors refinished correctly, Abeln Floor Systems is your best choice! The owner, Jim, is very knowledgeable and makes sure you are happy by his constant contact. His team is the best as well and care about making your floors look great. I researched many companies before picking Abeln’s to do my work. He gave me a bid at the beginning of the week and by the end of the week I had the beautiful floors you see here. I have been in my house almost 30 years and the floors had seen a lot of traffic. Jim and his crew took great care of us when we needed our floors restored. He was able to take out pet stains and had reclaimed wood available to perfect the restoration. I brought Jim Abelin in to refinish the original pine floors of my 1904 Shaw house. Unfortunately, due to the age/condition of the existing floor we ended up needing to put new hardwood flooring in. After talking with Jim over several options, we decided on 3.25" red oak to stay in line with the original character of the house. I could not be happier with the work Jim, Ben, and the rest of the team did on the new floors. The team really shines in their understanding and appreciation of historic homes. They are full of knowledge about older homes and willing to take the time to educate their clients. Jim was able to find and install original oak "egg crate" style cold air returns to replace the newer metal grates that were in the house. Newer oak flush-mount registers were installed and picture framing was added around the fireplaces. These details provide enough character to make a new floor look like it was original to the house. Being a 116 year old house certainly posed some challenges but the results are fantastic. Jim and his team were great partners throughout the project and I felt like they genuinely cared about my house and wanted to provide the highest quality floor they could. If you have a historic home, I would highly recommend reaching out.
Jim's crew refinished our entire first floor and stairs. 2nd floor was buffed and re-coated with polyurethane. He is very knowledgable about helping you pick the right stain color. He replaced all the shoe molding and allowed us to paint it our trim color before installing it so I didn't have to come around cut in on our new floors! His team did some repairs on our 1940s floors as well - all of which we were extremely pleased with and were of very low cost increase. Jim allows and encourages his clients to choose what is best for them and their budget - he doesn't push pricey things on you just to get a bigger paycheck. The team was very professional and kind. They cleaned up after themselves and were very respectful of my home. Jim gave us daily updates and was on site daily to manage the project with his own eyes (not that his crew needed babysitting!). I would highly recommend this company looking for any wood flooring project if you care what the end finish is going to look like!
This was the second time we have used Abeln Floor Systems. The picture will show both jobs, but you can't tell. The first was 10-12 years ago when we replaced our old peg and plank flooring with matching hardwood on our first floor, and a new install on our second floor. Both jobs were challenging. The first he had to lace in new hardwood on our upstairs landing into two bedrooms that had existing hardwood (not pictured here). It was seamless and can't tell the old from the new. In the picture, you will see the hardwood installed at 10+ years ago at the top and bottom of the picture. What you won't see is where the light switch is, on the left had side, there used to be a wall there, separating the two rooms. When the wall came down there was no sub-floor as the supports when straight to the basement. As you can see, he and his team completed a difficult patch to make the room look seamless...but please disregard the walls...they will be finished this week. I can't recommend Jim and his company high enough. They do fantastic work and they are efficient! If you are looking for new floors or for refinishing, call them and give them an opportunity to show you what they can do!

Although I ended up choosing to go with different flooring (they specialize in wood flooring) he remained on the phone with me & provided great advice and was a pleasure to speak to. Jim and his team were incredibly efficient. They worked with our schedule to refinish our floors. We purchased our house with the first floors unfinished. There were still nails and carpet staples from the carpet that had been covering it before. Now that our floors are refinished, it feels like a brand new house. The wood looks and feels fantastic, you can see all the detail brought out in the wood. The floors look better than the original!
We called Jim when we bought a house with poorly refinished pine floors. He responded quickly and proposed buffing the floors and applying an additional coat of poly. The work took place about a week after we first spoke, and Jim was easy to work with every step of the way--he is personable, communicates well, and sets clear expectations. I am a union carpenter, and so quality of work matters a great deal to me. Not only does the new finish look great, the fix Jim proposed did exactly what he said it would, and all at a reasonable price point.

Abeln floor systems just finished refinishing a bedroom and hallway. They look wonderful. Jim came in and explained what they would do and gave me a timeline that was flexible when I needed it to be. Jim, the owner, is very friendly and responsive. He really knows flooring. We had our entire main floor old golden oak sanded, stained, and finished. It came out beautiful and transformed our entire main floor. We used the color Heritage Brown, a color that is a gray-brown and really dark and the floors really pop. Ken, the guy who did the work, showed up on time every day, was really nice and informative, and he did a super job! It took 5 days for the process, but it was well worth it. I recommend Abeln without reservation -- true craftsmen! Others wouldn't even return phone calls.

Can't speak highly enough of the work Jim and Kenny did at my new home. We did a full sand, stain, and three coats of finish for the original (1929) red oak floors in my new home, plus shoe molding. Floors had a good amount of damage (soaked wood, gashes, etc.), beautiful restoration. Price was reasonable and the work was immaculate and remarkably efficient. Communication was solid. I am extremely happy with the results of my AbeIn project. I had an upstairs finished attic master bedroom with carpet on it. The house is from the 1930 and has nice hardwoods everywhere else. When I pulled the carpet, the floors there needed some work, so I called AbeIn. They got in fast, were extremely professional and did an amazing job. Communication was great throughout. Outstanding work by Jim and his skilled team on the red oak floor of my late father in laws 1950s ranch. Jim took time to explain every part of the process, and how we could save money by taking the nails and filling the holes ourselves. He even gave us a tub wood filler! We didn’t know what we’d find when we ripped up the wall-to-wall carpet in our 90 year-old home, but what was revealed was heavily gouged, paint-splattered, deeply stained yellow pine with a very large hump where the house’s I-beam is located. We were bracing ourselves for the price of total replacement, but Jim said we had a “treasure” that could be made beautiful again. He was right! Nathan and Harold were very respectful, always on time, and did stellar work for us. They persisted at getting rid of all the squeaks in the stairs and smoothed out the I-beam hump to where we don’t even notice it. Jim kept us informed the whole way and we couldn’t be more pleased with the result. We highly recommend Abeln Floor Systems with no reservations!
Just had my floors refinished after 30 years of wear and tear by kids and dogs. The floors look fantastic. A large portion of the floor needed to be replaced becasue of pet damage and they were able to use reclaimed red oak that matched my existing floor perfectly. I would recommend their services!
Just had my oak floors refinished in my 102 year old home. Ablen flooring systems had just what I needed to replace some of the flooring in my hallway. Looks like it was never damaged. Jim and his team refinished our 1962 parquet floors that had been covered by carpet for years. They needed repair and even replacement in parts. Jim did the work while I was out of town and helped me pick the stain color via multiple samples. He also creatively solved a few problems where the threshold transitions were significant. We had no idea what we were getting into when we pulled up the carpet in our home. Thankfully Jim and Mick had our backs and our best interests kept in mind.
